Test Prep for the DLOSCE
The American Board of Dental Examiners (ADEX) administers the ADEX Dental Examination series, which consists of both computer-based and clinical exam components. The computer-based component of the ADEX Dental Examination is the Dental Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Examination (DLOSCE). The DLOSCE is overseen by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations, owned by the American Dental Association (ADA), and is used by ADEX under an exclusive license from the ADA. All clinical examinations are based on specific performance criteria developed by ADEX and other content experts to measure the clinical competency of candidates.
Candidates are advised to read all applicable Candidate Manuals for the ADEX Dental Examination.
The examination includes questions involving patients of various types and backgrounds, including pediatric, geriatric, special needs, and medically complex patients. The DLOSCE utilizes the Universal/National System for tooth notation that has been adopted by the American Dental Association (ADA). This system is a sequential tooth numbering system, designating the permanent dentition (numbers 1-32), and the primary dentition (letters A-T).
Exam Resources
Candidates are encouraged to use textbooks, lecture notes, and other educational resources as primary study materials.
The DLOSCE presents clinical situations by asking questions in several different ways, including:
• Multiple-Choice, Single-Response Questions
• Multiple-Choice, Multiple-Response Questions
• Prescription Tasks
Questions will include a variety of resource types. Use the Practice Question Guide to better understand the items that will be presented.
Candidates should also familiarize themselves with the abbreviations and acronyms that will appear during the examination experience.
3D Modeling
The DLOSCE includes questions you will answer by using lifelike, three-dimensional (3D) models that can be manipulated, zoomed in and out, moved, and rotated. The sample tutorial provides instructions for interacting with DLOSCE 3D models and includes a link to a sample model, allowing candidates to practice with the 3D model before taking the test. Questions involving 3D models include a help section represented by a question mark in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Clicking the question mark displays an overlay screen that provides instructions on how to manipulate the model.
This sample model is provided for practice purposes only.
3D models within the DLOSCE differ, featuring lifelike graphics and features. Candidates should be aware that, for purposes of this examination, all margins on 3D models have been placed supragingivally. Please note that the sample model is not compatible with mobile devices.
For best performance, the model should be accessed using a computer with Windows 10 or Mac OS 10.15 Catalina or newer OS, and the Google Chrome Web Browser Version 56 or newer.
